Indicators of Roof Damage

Our winter rains are usually much more gentle than our monsoons. However, they can cause damage to our roofing. The best thing about finding roof damage is that the earlier it’s caught, the less damage it is likely to do. Here are some ways a homeowner can spot damage before they even call the roofing company.

Leaks

If you see leaks or damage in your attic or on your ceiling, repair or replacement is a certainty. This is also true if your skylight is leaking. Often, it isn’t the skylight that is the problem; it’s the roof around it. So, if the skylight looks like it’s leaking, don’t call a skylight company, call a roofing company.

Falling debris

Falling branches or a falling tree can cause extensive damage to a home. A falling tree can even cause structural damage. If a tree has landed on your home, get out of the house until it can be inspected!

Shingles

Another thing to watch for is fallen shingles, pieces of metal such as flashing, edging, or other parts of a roof. Creased or cracked shingles have come partially loose and flapped in the wind. They must be repaired. Depending on the damage, it may be covered by a manufacturer’s wind warranty. If you live in a subdivision, look around at neighboring roofs. If they have roof damage, likely, you may also have damage. A large quantity of granules at the downspout or on the ground around the house is a sign that shingles have been damaged.

Hail damage

Hail damage manifests itself as dimples in the shingles. The chances are good that if there are other items nearby or siding which have been damaged by hail, the roof needs to be checked for hail damage as well.

Soffit or fascia damage

Soffit or fascia that has been damaged or is missing also needs to be repaired because they are part of an integrated system to keep moisture out of your home. Some people think they’re purely decorative, but this is not the case.

Professional inspection

These tips can help a homeowner determine if expert advice is needed. However, the average homeowner shouldn’t climb on their roof. First, because it can be dangerous and cause more damage. Second, because while these are general tips to find visible damage, a professional is much more skilled at finding minor damage to the roof before it gets out of control and makes the roof leak. If you have concerns about possible weather damage, our roofing experts have the necessary tools and skills to perform a roof inspection. They are friendly and can quickly determine if there is a problem with your roof.
